It is the last day of the holidays and it is raining heavily- I can't think of a more depressing combination! So, in order to stop my back to school blues, I have compiled a range of photographs that make me happy or just look nice. Hope this cheers all of you up a bit...

Obsession of the moment...

Vintage Makeup

After visiting the Farnham Maltings' Vintage Festival last Sunday with the Founder of http://www.modadelamode.blogspot.com/, I have become obsessed with vintage hair and makeup.

Long lashes and red lips make a woman look so feminine and it is such a nice change from the grungy/androgynous style which is so popular.

In particular, I love the styles from the 20s, 40s, 50s and 60s. All the decades have their own unique style of hair and makeup, which just scream glamor and elegance.

The women of the 20s rejected the old fashioned and constricting styles of the past and opted for more playful and fun styles. In the Victorian era, even the slightest hint of blush indicated that a woman was a slut. But, the women of the 20s changed these out-dated ideas and paved the way for all new beauty trends to date.

The 40s and 50s saw the revival of the beauty spot and the trend for smoldering eyes. Both styles exude sexiness and are commonly used by celebrities today such as Katy Perry and Christina Aguilera.

The 60s was all about big hair, the more volume the better. This was another very feminine trend and was the height of glamor and sophistication.

One of the main focuses of 60s makeup was the eyes. Previously, it was both lips and eyes that women wanted to emphasise with their makeup, but now it was all about the lashes.

Twiggy popularized the craze for big eyes and would often draw on her bottom lashes with eye pencil.

This image taken at the Met Ball 2011 for Vogue.com beauty, shows that even to this day many women take inspiration from the beauty trends of the past.

Street where the riches of ages are stowed...

Portobello Road

Ever since my childhood, I have wanted to visit the Portobello Road market. It all started with the song Portobello Road from Bedknobs and Broomsticks, which described the weird and wonderful things you could buy there. This interest was then further fueled by the book Fashion Babylon, which explained how designers would go there to get inspiration for their new collections and some vintage designer bargains! So, I decided enough was enough and I had to go there and experience it for myself...

There were thousands of stalls selling everything you could possibly want. There were buskers, incense sellers, clothing, music, food and so much more!

Portobello Market 4 - Notting Hill, London
The market is a great place to go to buy unique fashion pieces for pennies.

Even just people watching is fascinating!

Who needs Pizza Express when you've got stalls like this?

Unfortunately, I was rather disappointed that none of the jewelery sellers asked me "Who do you think you are? The Queen of Sheba?" when I was trying on their jewelery.

My purchases:

A feather headband similar to this one, which allows you to make so many different hairstyles. My favourite being a modern twist on a 30s look. This can be achieved by tucking you hair up into the back of the elastic.

and...

A watch locket necklace similar to this one.

If you are visiting London you MUST visit the Portobello market. It makes you feel like Austin Powers is just about to walk around the corner and it has a very Brighton feel to it. I recommend visiting on a Saturday and spending the whole day looking round. But wear comfortable shoes as you will be on your feet all day!
